Corporate Responsibility
The Millennium Hotels and Resorts team understands that our customers, investors, employees and suppliers actively choose their relationships with the Group. Increasingly, this choice depends on the degree to which we demonstrate corporate social responsibility: behaving ethically and legally, treating our employees with respect and consideration, finding ways to minimise our impact on the environment and doing what we can to improve the lives of those in the wider community around us.
Aside from its social contribution as a profitable, taxpaying enterprise, the Board recognises that delivering good, long-term returns to shareholders requires it to demonstrate commitment to corporate social responsibility. To this end, the Group has adopted – and reviews regularly – a number of policies, collectively referred to as Responsible Hospitality.
As part of Responsible Hospitality, the Group is committed to upholding human rights and helping to prevent slavery and human trafficking. In line with the enactment of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, please see our current slavery and human trafficking statement below.
The Board understands the need to communicate to stakeholders its progress on executing these policies. See the full statement of the Group's corporate responsibility programme.

Approach of the Group to tax risk management and governance
Our tax risk management and governance arrangements include the following key elements:
- The M&C Group board of directors and the Group’s Senior Accounting Officer (“SAO”) are responsible for determining our approach to tax risk and tax strategy.
- Day-to-day management of the Group’s tax affairs is handled by the Group Tax team in the UK who report to the SAO. The Group Tax team is staffed with appropriately qualified individuals, supported by external advisers as appropriate.
- M&C Group seeks to actively resolve any uncertainty in the interpretation of tax legislation with HM Revenue and Customs (“HMRC”).
- The Group seeks to reduce the level of tax risk arising from its operations as far as is reasonably practicable by ensuring that reasonable care is applied to all processes which could materially affect its compliance with its tax obligations.
- M&C Group maintains a Preventing Tax Evasion Policy, Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, and Tax Risk and Control Matrices to document and assess the tax risks the Group faces, and the controls in place to mitigate those risks. The former are published on the Group’s website under the Corporate Responsibility section.
- M&C Group monitors and manages UK tax risks with the use of core financial controls within Finance and Accounts and a specialised Group Tax function.
- Processes relating to different tax risks are allocated to appropriate process owners, who monitor these risks for business and legislative changes which may impact them and changes to processes or controls are made when required.
Attitude towards tax planning and level of risk
M&C Group’s sustainable approach to tax means it has a low appetite for tax risk and manages risk with the objective to ensure compliance with all applicable tax rules and regulations and payment of the right amount of tax, in the right jurisdictions and at the right time.
M&C Group is committed to trading within the law and maintaining the highest possible ethical standards in all its business activities. It is vital to the continued success of the Group that we behave with honesty, integrity and in compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and to avoid any activities that could lead to any harm to the Group’s reputation or image.
Any transactions undertaken by M&C Group have a commercial purpose. We may consider a range of tax outcomes based on the underlying commercial intent of any business activity or transaction and advice may be sought from external tax advisers in evaluating risk areas, adhering to complex tax laws and implementing best practice.
The Group does not undertake tax planning that might adversely impact its relationship with HMRC or reputation with our wider stakeholder community.
Approach towards its dealings with HMRC
We engage with HMRC constructively, honestly and in a professional manner through regular and transparent communication with our Customer Compliance Manager at HMRC.
