Our Milestones

1941

Hong Leong Group founder Mr Kwek Hong Png sets up Hong Leong Company.

1970

King’s Hotel opens near the Singapore River at Havelock, under the direction of Mr Kwek Leng Beng.

1972

Hong Leong Group acquires City Developments Limited (CDL).

1986

The company’s owners acquires Orchard Hotel as part of its expansion in Singapore and Malaysia.

1989

Formed as a Hong Leong subsidiary, CDL Hotels International acquires its first 6 Asian hotels.

1993

The company buys the 548-room Millennium Gloucester Hotel London Kensington and takes control of a 13-hotel chain in New Zealand.

1994

CDL enters the US market, acquiring the Millennium Hilton and the Millennium Broadway Hotel New York.

1995

CDL acquires Copthorne Hotels from Aer Lingus for £219 million, and launches its new global hotel brand, Millennium Hotels And Resorts. Around this time, the Group becomes New Zealand's largest hotel owner.

1996

Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc (M&C) floats on the London Stock Exchange. During the same year, it acquires the Millennium Hotel London Mayfair from InterContinental, as well as hotels in France and Germany.

1999 - 2001

Having made further hotel acquisitions in Europe, US, Asia and New Zealand.

2006

The group makes inroads into China with the opening of the Millennium Hongqiao Shanghai, located west of the city centre.

2014

Besides acquiring the Boscolo Palace Roma in Rome, the group also opens its first hotel in Japan, the Millennium Mitsui Garden Hotel Tokyo.

2023

The group launches the M Social Hotel Suzhou, its first M Social-branded property in China.

2024

M Social Hotel Phuket, designed to exude a more relaxed ambience, makes its debut on the Thai island’s vibrant Patong area.

2025

The group continues to expand its contemporary brand M Social with the opening of its Penang branch in March.
